ME TOO! :cheers4:

to add, he recently resigned from the board and spoke out against why a hospital in Jurong should be renamed Ng Teng Fong hospital.

I agree with him, if your kid asks you why that hospital is named after someone who had no previous contribution to the medical field, what do u tell him? becoz he's rich? got money can buy naming rights in public establishments?

the main reason i tink bcoz Mr Ng only donated a small portion of the entire cost....i tink ard 1/4 rite? if Mr NG sponsored fully...den i got nothing to say

even then its not morally correct. want to do philanthropy, wat for show off? Mr. Tan also disagreed with Khoo Teck Phuat hospital but he had already left PAP then so couldn't voice out.

correction: Mr. Tan had already left parliament then. he only recently left PAP.

just to add, i have no issues with private buildings being renamed after khoo or ng but disagree for public buildings unless it is for some other reason than "he donated all the money."

Then again, its not him. Its the people who decide to name the hospital after him!!! :spliff:

you Singaporeans very funny. got 1 rich lose $100 million at casino, people complain should donate money instead.
Now have 1 rich guy donate $100million to hospital, also complain. Would you prefer if he had gamble away $50million at casino?

I fully agree with Tan's argument that since the hospital costs >$1b and Ng TF family only donate $100m or 10%, they could have 1 medical building named after Ng TF but not the whole hospital. Well, if Ng TF family sponsor the whole hospital costs of >$1b + the upkeep and maintenance, by all means call it whatever they like, whether Ng TF or not.
If what they did is right, NUS & NTU will not be called what they are now as they have several buildings named after respective donors. :beats-me-man:

S'poreans might prefer a President 'not so closely related' to PAP: Lim Boon Heng
By Ng Jing Yng, TODAY (http://www.todayonline.com/) | Posted: 30 May 2011 0621 hrs

SINGAPORE: Given the current sentiment among the electorate, Singaporeans might prefer a President who is not so closely linked to the People's Action Party (PAP), retired minister Lim Boon Heng said on Sunday when asked about former PAP MP Tan Cheng Bock's bid to run for the Elected Presidency.

The former Minister in the Prime Minister's Office said he read the news of Dr Tan's intention with "very, very mixed feelings".

Both Mr Lim and Dr Tan were first elected to Parliament in the 1980 General Election (GE). They were parliamentary colleagues for 26 years before Dr Tan stepped down from politics prior to the 2006 GE. Mr Lim retired from the political scene before the recent GE.

Speaking at the sidelines of a People's Association event, Mr Lim said: "My sense is that people would prefer if there were someone who can be a strong unifying symbol for Singaporeans, who's not so closely related to the PAP."

While there could be exceptions, he added: "I don't know whether Dr Tan Cheng Bock, in spite of his independent streak of thinking and expression of views, fully meets the bill."

Mr Lim said he hopes that other capable Singaporeans will come forward so that the country could pick the "best person for the current climate that we have". - TODAY (http://www.todayonline.com/)

it seems like since the jurong hospital thinghy, its increasingly clear that PAP doesn't back him.

outspoken former PAP pple like ong teng cheong and tan cheng bok often become true EX-PAP after they leave becoz they are not yes-man.

The PAP-insiders certainly knew Dr Tan Cheng Bock as PAP-elected candidate. Heard he was a standby for previous presidential election if a chinese were to compete with Nathan. Then PAP withdraw Nathan and put in Dr Tan. Probably that's why Lim Boon Heng expressed his discomfort now that he is out of PAP.

Very happen what one sees is on the outside, lots of stories insider. Maybe Dr Tan speaks against hospital naming for a reason, more than meets the eyes. So confusing..... its politics afterall.

Being a President is an easy job of just a figure head and gives excellent pay and perks. Why not run for one if you meet the qualifying criteria? :)

It should be more than just a figure-head. Need one who is not connected to PAP. I totally agree with Lim Boon Heng that he should be uniting Singaporeans. Time for change.....
