6 misconceptions most Singaporeans have about living in Bukit Panjang (District 23)

Bukit Panjang is a famous spot for being in the center of the LRT line. However, it is not often known, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the West area.

I’ve had people who asked me where I lived, and when I told them around Bukit Panjang (one of the LRT stations, actually), they asked me where it was. It is therefore quite easy to mistake this ‘obscure’ in the small Singapore as something it is not.

Isolated
Bukit Panjang is isolated, yes. It is not in the central town area like Orchard, true. But it is not all that isolated as you think. Bukit Panjang now has an LRT station and a Downtown station as well.

Choa Chu Kang is a pretty known spot on the red line, and Bukit Panjang is closely associated with it. Not many have heard of it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t close.

Small
For many years, Bukit Panjang Plaza has remained small. Therefore, despite renovations and the opening of new wings, people have retained the mindset that this mall is tiny.

While Bukit Panjang is small, it also means that we can easily walk from one neighbourhood to the next, with Bukit Panjang at the being the center of them. In fact, it’s easy to just refer to the entire area as Bukit Panjang area, especially because most people won’t have heard of the others!

Food options
Bukit Panjang does not seem like it has a lot of variety to offer. You’ll be surprised to find that the changes in recent years have updated its menu.

From Japanese buffets to Western restaurants to the newly renovated food court to a basement chock full of specialised food stores, you’ll find that it has grown greatly. FoodFare has even opened up a huge food centre and dry wet market in the area.

Travel
Because it’s ‘isolated’, it’s not easy to move around to other places if you live in Bukit Panjang? That may have been true before, and especially true when the bus interchange was relocated further away. However, being a small area, you can easily walk over to the next bus stop that has a completely different set of bus routes, most of which will take you to the spot you want or close to it!

With a new MRT line, you’ll find that travel will become even easier, so quickly get rid of this misconception because Bukit Panjang will soon be one of the central points of travel!

Communities
Guess how many community centres are around Bukit Panjang? Well, there’s Bukit Panjang Community Center, Zhenghua Community Center, and the Senja-Cashew Community Center! Like I mentioned above, it’s small enough that it’s easy to walk around and associate these places with each other.

Shopping Malls
Surprisingly enough, there are not one but two malls within Bukit Panjang, all within walking distance of each other. There’s construction activity going on now, though, so the routes there have altered a little. Junction 10 shopping mall (which has also been renovated over the past years) from the least visited LRT station Ten Mile Junction, and Bukit Panjang Plaza itself. There are also plenty of hawker centres strewn around the void decks, including the famous food stall at Block 163 of Gangsa Road that sells delicious handmade Koka noodles.

Do you find Bukit Panjang interesting now? Don’t be afraid to hop down and have a look with your own eyes at the new Bukit Panjang!

Not only is near to Choa Chu Kang, it is also very near to Bukit Timah.

If I'm not wrong, there is a public swimming inside the Senja-Cashew Community Center which is opposite the Bukit Panjang Plaza.

At Bangkit Road (one of the road name in Bukit Panjang), there is a connection park that can lead to Bukit Timah hill. There are also lots of food in this area, dry markets, clinic, banks, Giant Supermarket and schools. It is also near to BKE, going to town area or to Johor is only a distant away. If no jam, I think is about 15 mins drive to town area (going down) or causeway (going up).

the swimming pool was quite crowded and small, only a children play pool and lap pool, don't have a middle pool.

there is new hawker centre at bangkit road, upcoming shopping centre and bus interchange next to bukit panjang plaza.

most of people stay at bukit panjang prefer to take bus to town area, the buses go by BKE expressway, is faster than train.

Now the new ulu to the max place is the bukit batok west area. Many of the recent sale of balance flats units are from there.

Actually not that bad staying there leh. I have friends staying there. Lots of food and individual shops at Bangkit Road though MRT is not near Bangkit Road but there are buses that travel via BKE - PIE, quite fast to the town area (about 20 mins).

Even agent also has the misconception about that area. Once I talked to an agent about Bukit Panjang, she said wow, why so far away and I told her that I don't understand why people think that this place is far away, it is next to Bukit Timah and Choa Chu Kang, if Bukit Panjang is far away, that means Bukit Timah and Choa Chu Kang is even further. Bukit Panjang is just only a small town, maybe not fully developed yet so not much people know about it, whereas Bukit Timah and CCK are matured estates and big town, so almost everybody knows about it.

Frankly speaking, before my friends shifted to Bukit Panjang, I also didn't know that there is such a place till I visited them, not so bad after all, there are lots of shops and market at Bangkit Road which is the central of Bukit Panjang, I suppose. I guess there is not much media news about this area whereas BT and CCK seems to be more popular with the media news. I have another friend who stay at Pasir Ris (maybe also depend on which part of Pasir Ris), around her area, no food stall, no market, buses also very limited, need to walk a distance. She said during CNY, Bangkit Road has lot of things to sell, she likes to go there to buy things. Since her brother also stayed somewhere near Bangkit Road, certain year when she was not free, she would ask her brother to help her to buy. But I think there is some renovation going on at the passage of the Bangkit shop houses till after CNY, so maybe this coming CNY, might not have so much things to see as before.

i stayed in bukit panjang for many years already..its a very nice place...most people who think is ulu never being there...bus network in bukit panjang is super developed...can get to many places using bus ...in fact the downtown line mrt was a non event really because most ppl in bukit panjang prefer to use the bus...bke pie/kje brings you everywhere...and its a very small town very well organized and maintained compared to many other places...lots of greens...i always find it laughable that people think CCK or bukit batok is better place than bukit panjang...haha

most of the tenants choose bukit panjang coz of the nature feel where bukit timah nature reserve is nearby, as for bangkit, best not to stay near there as quite a crowded place, especially in the morning, many temporary pop-up stores

Ok lah, to be frank, I stayed in Bangkit too (about 16 years already), :smug: But I do have 4 familes of my ex-neighbours (when I was a teenage) shifted to Bukit Panjang (I think longer than me). Though it is crowded in the morning (I think till about 11am) because of the pop-up stores but is convenient, you have the chance of browsing through something that you want when the normal stores don't have. Just like Rochor Centre, there are always pop-up stores next to OG, isn't it convenient for the shoppers also and the place is so popular.

There are few ways to go about in Bangkit, you need not necessary pass through the crowded area. As for my house, it is actually very quiet, can't hear the noisy market sound at all and yet convenient for me, whenever I need something, either food, groceries or bank, is within my reach.:D

And I also never realise till last year, from my unit, I can actually see the sun rise and sun set at certain times but now there is a mechanical carpark, it blocks some of the sunset view, sign.....

Now I can't wait to shift back to my Bangkit EC (rented out, tenancy ends Nov 2018). It is so convenient there, with lots of food, shops and markets, transport (buses) also not so bad though MRT is not convenient at my place. I'm now temporary staying at Punggol HDB, only 1 year already cannot take it. It is too near to highway. Opposite neighbour very noisy, they don't talk normally but shout, even though my door is closed, I can still hear what they said. Not much things to shop near here too except 1 Prime supermarket and 1 coffeeshop. Very damp here too, things get mold easily, all my cupboards got mold and also toilet don't know why, have lots of flying insects, flying to my bedrooms and hall too. Everyday see lots of dead flies on the floor when I come back from work but some still flying in the toilet, the flies landed on my towel, shirts and toilet papers also, sometimes even my plates, all over the place.
