Flash floods hit West Coast, condo carpark
    Published on Nov 13, 2011
    By Judith Tan

A sudden downpour on Saturday afternoon caused flooding in the basement carpark of Varsity Park Condominium.

Some residents of the condo in West Coast Road found their cars in bumper-high water, bringing back memories of a similar situation in July last year at another condo.

Then, luxury and sports cars in the basement carpark of the Tessarina, a development in Bukit Timah, were submerged.

A tenant of Varsity Park, who declined to be named, said he got home just after 2pm, in time to move his car to safety.

Our flood alert system not good... , should have separate radio station dedicated to flood update whenever there's impending storm and possibility of flood...

Am also worried..when it raining heavily, I tend to avoid small roads, bukit timah and tanglin orchard area...

This stretch of condos near Clementi Woods is vulnerable to flood due to location below the hills. The lower parts of Clementi Woods have ponding frequently and the canal beside clementi west HDB block 609 and 608 overflows easily.

actually how does the flood alert system works? by human observation or this there an electronic device that detects the water level? If it's the first time at Varsity Park, then chances are they didn't install those devices there.

residents at Varsity Park must be worred sick by the flooding problem. very soon some lady will begin to film flooding situations and use it as evidence to convince the government to do something to stop the flooding, so that prices of the condo will not go down.

but what can be done? elevate the entire stretch of west coast road? but that would push flood waters to nearby condos.

Along the entire stretch of west coast, the lowest is the NUS and the PSA area. The rest are relatively higher and safe from flooding. So your condo is safe.

We have Thailand suffering from its most severe flood in 50 years. This is probably caused by more intense El-Nino Southern Oscillation (in line with what I mentioned about similar phenomena about 1 year ago).

I expect the monsoon to be more severe here end of this year and in the next few years, so you will need to rule out many places also.

After which Singapore will switch to very hot and dry. However we are cutting down mature trees now and building more heat absorbing concrete and air-conditioned mega structures. It will be quite exhausting for outdoor activities and commuting by walking.

we might consider investing into jet-skis as our alternative mode of transportation if there are frequent floods here...

What do you mean by 'flood prone'? It's supposed to be once in 50 years event! PUB is indirectly slapping ex-Minister of MEWR in the face.

Now need to add West Coast Road onto that PUB list of flood prone areas...

    PUB website definition:

    http://www.pub.gov.sg/managingflashf...s/default.aspx

"Flood prone areas are those areas which are low-lying, with a history of flooding. With an ongoing drainage improvement programme, PUB has reduced flood prone areas in Singapore from about 3,200 hectares in the 1970s to 56 hectares today. With continuous drainage improvement works, this will be further reduced to 40 hectares in 2013"

quiet poor thing to have flooding in one's area. When ever one see dark clouds will start to worry about their world class cars.... Even west coast so near to sea also will kanna.

after they start to raise roads, the water will start to flow downwards......
