The truth about GST:
- GST is a regressive tax
- GST penalizes people who have no incomes because they either have retired, too young to work, unable to work due to various reasons (medical, housewives, physical and mental disabilities). As such, GST is a "cruel" tax vs income tax (in layman term) because it taxes everybody who is breathing and need to live even when they have no income.
- Because GST taxes people with no income like babies, young kids, and old people, it discourages people to have babies, and to take care of their parents (additional taxes means additional burden).
- GST causes inflation, particularly everytime it has been increased.
- GST increases businesses' administrative costs, and these costs will ultimately be expected to be passed on to consumers, hence increasing cost of living.
- SG GST increases the burden of retirees tremendously, because medical services and medicine have not been exempted from GST (UNLIKE most other countries where medical and basic necessities are all EXEMPTED from GST).
- You can't compare SG GST of 7% with say UK GST (they call it "VAT") of 17.5% in terms of absolute figure because UK GST exempts all medical, basic necessities, and children products and services! (If UK is going to tax all these, UK GST is probably equivalent to 3% of SG GST only?)
- What else???
