my kitchen sink is stainless steel, no problem.

Now that you have had bad experience with marble, you may consider granite for the top.

marble specialist would be able to help you by using some chemical powers, but no guarantee it will work to get rid of all stains.

Anyway to get rid of the stain?

high quality granite will do the work for countertop. Granite can still be polished if needed (but very expensive).

guess different stainless steel may also of different quality. if you choose stainless steel, may choose a relatively thicker, pricier one.

kitchen sink must be stainless steel because of persistent exposure to water.
However, make sure you get good-quality ones (saw those cheap ones rusting after more than 2 years!).

we use vinegar but I have no idea whether we have spilled it on the marble or not because it is my maid who cooks.

we use cleaning detergent (for dishes) bought from NTUC to clean the marble.

yeah don't try. i also accidentaly spill chlorine on my marble floor. Instant damage. anything acidic will have a etching effect on marble. so u need to be careful abt that.

How to differentiate between a good and normal stainless steel?

There are actually standards (I was told previously, but forgot about what is it now). However, any standard is useless for products "made in China" (because they wrote they conform to that standard but in reality they didn't).
Usually for high-quality pure stainless steel product the company willing to give life-time warranty against rust.

Yesterday went to Ikea, most of their stainless steel sinks have 25 years warranty but the sinks look thin to me leh. Saw one stainless steel sink made from Germany at Jalan Besar, quite nice and reasonable price, the salesman told me that it is scratched proof, but the sink base has design like "small dot, small dot", sorry don't know how to express it. I'm afraid that dirt might trap in between the dots but he said won't leh.

The lustre of good stainless steel (316) is whiter, while the lower grade (304) is a bit yellowish. 316 has molybdenum metal that allows it to resist chloride attack better.

Yesterday went down to Balestier, quite a few shops too. Wow, since 304 is the lower, I guess yesterday what I saw was even the lowest because it is only 302, the salesgirl told me that it is from USA.

The one that I mentioned on #41 above is 316 stainless steel, looks quite nice but the only consideration is will the dirt get trapped on the dots and hard to remove.

You can try Teka's sink, 18/10 or equivalent to 316 stainless steel.
Choose the smooth surface is better.

Thank you. Knowing the difference type of stainless steel is also a kind of knowledge.

I am not sure if he has quartz, as it was not popular four years ago. anyway, I haven't encountered any problem with marble.
I have tried calling the number but no longer in use. Did you all ever heard of SG Kitchen Top?

I saw a post in renotalk and found a few but most of them only do the countertop + cabinet. I have tried calling a few companies thru' the search of the websites, some said they only supply stones, some said they don't just do the countertop, some of them, prices are fantastic. I have found 2 who solely do the countertops, but one of them only have solid surface (don't need to pay till completion) and the other have all the materials (ie quartz, granite and solid surface) but he requires 50% deposit upon confirmation, is that normal? He offered me India Black Galaxy, what do you all think of this material, actually I want to do quartz but his price for quartz is so much expensive.

I believe you knew by now, quartz is more expensive.

India Black Galaxy is nice, all black background with stars on it. Joint line wont look obvious since it is also black. India granite is of better quality, no problem de.

why don't you get a contractor to help you re-do your kitchentop? need to take measurements, drill holes, etc etc. i don't know about quartz but my granite top was really heavy.

as for your contact, why don't you scour the forum to see if there are any reviews on him? he must at least have that BCA cert/stamp

Thanks. I can't find any review on him but I did find his phone being mentioned in the renotalk.

I think quartz are equally heavy as granite, don't know whether my existing cabinet can withstand the weight or not?

Hmm... a bit tough, might not look good with this matching colour. But Indian granite are mostly dark colour leh, only China granite have some lighter colours to choose. Does your contractor have marble? Marble is also good.

I think I prefer quartz because it is easier to maintain. Maybe choose china quatz because it is cheaper. Just found 2 contractors, prices around 2.4k to 2.5k including plumber, carpentry and materials. Is it reasonable?

Is it advisable to have the tap drill on the countertop because some of the stainless steel sinks don't have extra space for the tap hole.
