This is really unprecedented.

After media reported lack of funds is preventing a symbolic team lead by SDA's Nazem Suki to contest at Tanjong Pagar GRC for MM Lee's mandate.

Singaporeans and celebrities organise a 2-day fund raiser to raise $48,000 dollars for the 5 member team to send the team into Tanjong Pagar GRC.

This is to ensure all Singapore are contested and give voters at Tanjong Pagar GRC a chance after 30 years walkover.

This is really unprecedented Singaporean community working together on its own with no government prodding.

It was similiar to Singaporeans donating to help pay for Chee Soon Juan's court fine of $20,000.

Hope for the best and all turn out well eventually.

Good try. Social Media & New Media is giving PAP, ST and CNA nightmares.

Neo Swee Lin The biggest question we are getting now is "what if I donate and they don't get the $48K they need. Will I get my money back?" The answer is you SHOULD get it back. But I am afraid I can't guarantee that. This has all been very last minute and is still unfolding. So give what you can. Hope that it works. Sorry, that's the best I can do now.

Dim Sum Dollies helping Opposition

Despite setbacks, several Opposition members who are eyeing the Tanjong Pagar GRC were engaged last night in a last-ditch attempt to get themselves ready for Nomination Day - with a little help from two of the actresses from the Dim Sum Dollies.

Actresses Selena Tan and Pamela Oei yesterday appealed for funds on their Facebook pages to help the aspiring candidates.

The posting on Ms Oei's Facebook page read: "They need $48k in the next two hours…before bank closes for them to buy bank drafts. (Mr Nazem) assures us that if they are unable to run for any reason, they will return the money to everyone who has transferred money to them."

Ms Tan told Today that she had posted messages for help on her Facebook page but declined to comment further if she had contributed funds. "I only wish for all constituencies to be contested," said Ms Tan.

The men hoping to stand against Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and his team in Tanjong Pagar include Socialist Front (SF) chairman Ng Teck Siong and Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) assistant secretary-general Nazem Suki.

Mr Nazem, who is also secretary-general of the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS), wrote on his Facebook page that his team was still short of 40 per cent of the funds needed.

Raising funds at such short notice is not the two men's only problem; they have yet to obtain their parties' blessings.

The PKMS, an SDA component party, issued a statement yesterday saying that party members could face permanent expulsion if they decided to stand with another team in Tanjong Pagar.

The Socialist Front had said earlier that Mr Ng would be asked to resign if he decided to stand there.

Agree. Singaporeans should just relax a bit and not so afraid of sharing other views, including political views (climate of fear is still very prevalent). This is already kopi TCSS section. just like mycarforum and hardwarezone also have a fair share of TCSS section, other than cars and computer :)

I'm all for more alternative voices in government and am very heartened to hear of singaporeans donating to hear opp cause. Yet these people can miss the deadline? In the first place, its a bit hard to believe these white collar pple do not have $12k each (maybe they are unwilling to part with their $) and now singaporeans help u come up with the funds u submit late??!!
I really don't know what to say now but I feel they have let their supporters down

With this kind of standard, it is a blessing in disguise that they did not qualify to contest. Today's disappointment is minor compared to the epic antics they could potentially muster in parliament, if elected.

Now all 12 SMCs are contested and only punggol will have 3 corners fight... Hmmm... PP SMC voters still appear to be very supportive of Mrs Chiam... got hope to retain le... All signals seem to suggest that it's gonna be a historical watershed election like 1959 le... Hmmm... :cheers6:

THEY HAD raised some $52,000 from supporters and well-wishers to pay for their election deposits, but were disqualified from contesting Tanjong Pagar GRC after filing their nomination forms late.

On Friday, the group of five independents returned almost all of the money to the people who loaned or donated it to them.

Leader of the group Ng Teck Siong, 69, and group member Mr Nazem Suki, 42, made their way to the POSB branch at Marine Parade on Friday noon to transfer the money back to their well-wishers.

These people had transferred over sums ranging from $500 to $5,000 to the group to help them in their election bid. Another two supporters had loaned the group $20,000 and $19,000, but they had already returned $5,000 of it on Wednesday, said Mr Ng.

By the end of Friday, most of the money, except for 'a couple of thousands' had been returned. Mr Ng said some of the donors had asked the group to keep the money.

The group said it would donate the rest of the money left unclaimed by 12 noon on Saturday to charity.
