Not exactly! I know quite a number of condo's (esp far east's) charge up $20-$30 for function rooms!

e.g. simsville, villa marina etc

Charging should only be considered if there is always a long queue for the use of such facilities. In this case, charging is to regulate demand to a manageable level. Other than regulating demand, it makes no sense to charge for use of facilities. Management can always raise maintenance fees if there is a lack of it.

Agree. It make sense to charge if people start booking happily and didn't turn up. This will deprive others who need to use the facilities. Having them to pay a fee will make them think twice before making the booking.

I am also wondering whether my condo rules are the same as other condo rules too.

My place charges:-
1) $20 for Multi-purpose Hall, with a refundable deposit of $50 (with time slots)
2) $5 for BBQ pit (max 30 guests at the BBQ area), with a refundable deposit of $50 (with time slots).
3) Karaoke is $25 per session with a refundable deposit of $50.
4) Gym and Multi-Purpose Court (tennis/badminton) are free
5) 2nd car needs to pay $50 per month but upon balloting quarterly.
All vehicles if park illegally will be wheel clamp and owners need to pay adm fee of $107 and a charge of $20 per addn day to release the clamp.

I have heard of charging for bbq pits, karaoke and function room.

Not for swimming pool, gym, basketball court, tennis court, reading room.

a small fee is applied to bbq booking, the intend is to prevent ppl from booking but no show which deprived the actual user.

Not for gym, it would be really ridiculous and mercenary !!

Charging for use of facilities in condos was unheard of in the past. But unfortunately the density in condos built nowadays are so high that on weekends it is madness to use a facility.

It really depends on the kind of people living there. Be it owners or tenants. If repeated case of not turning up for booking or leaving bbq pits messy after use, deposit scheme or usage fee may need to be introduced and enforced. This is of coz the decision of the MA cum MCST.

Some condos charge extra for 2nd car to park. Some gives FOC for 2nd car.

Some condos charge extra for 2nd car to park. Some gives FOC for 2nd car.

For my place, 2nd car park is free but the car must be parked in a far away place and not near the blocks. 3rd car park is also free if parked in the open on the first level, if 3rd car want to park in basement shaded car park then a fee of $100 per month is chargeable.

Function room booking is $20 for half day.

BBQ pit refundable deposit of $20.

The rest of facilities eg tennis court, squash court, sauna, pool and gym are FOC.

There are no hard and fast rules for charging. The management council is empowered to impose charges. These have to be approved by residents thru an AGM.

Generally, charges are imposed for good reasons - usually for responsible usage and to defray for the cost of maintaining the facilities. You may argue that residents already pay maint fees so why need to pay more for usage. This is usually to keep the maint fees "low" for the majority who don't use these facilities and for those who use, they pay for the usage - which is usually a nominal sum. Pools are usuallly not chargeable as its assumed most people use them and for the simple reason that it is administratively difficult to administer.

At the end of the day, it is up to the residents to decide. If you want to make a change, then join your estate's mgt council to make the change.:D
