Teddybear how many units do you have?

50 workers living like sardines in 2 condo units

About 50 construction workers from India and Bangladesh were crammed into two condo units in Selegie Centre (pictured) near Little India, revealed a spot check by officials from the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) and reported in the media.

“Upon our inspection, we found that the living conditions of the workers are unacceptable. We urge the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to take serious action against the employer. This kind of behaviour cannot be condoned,” said MWC Executive Director Bernard Menon.

One unit is as big as a typical two-bedroom apartment which can accommodate a family of four. The workers slept on the floor, or on wooden boards along the hallways outside the apartments.

Based on Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)’s rules, leased residential properties should only accommodate up to eight people, regardless of size.

Subsequently, officers from MOM went to the condo units and recorded the details of all the employees living there.

“Our initial assessment is that the units are overcrowded and we are investigating several employers for failing to ensure that their foreign employees have acceptable accommodation,” said a spokesperson from the ministry.

Employers who fail to provide proper accommodation for their workers can be imprisoned for up to one year and/or pay a fine of up to $10,000.

MWC officials also checked an improvised hut in Geylang Lorong 8, where Harri Construction & Maintenance have housed 16 of their workers from India. Situated at the backyard of an apartment block, the zinc-roof hovel was built above an underground sewage tank.

The MOM representative added they are investigating some of the workers’ allegations that their employer owes them several months’ worth of salaries.

I walk past RV point every day , it is at the junction of Mohamed sultan and river valley road, the building is basically 99% completed but there appears to be about 20 banglas living on the ground floor , they are basically using what is supposed to be luxury accommodation as their slum , with all the washing, cooking etc lining river valley road , if I was invested in this building and trying to subselli would be very annoyed and I cant see how the developer can sell or show units with all this going on, the way these guys are living you would have to question the quality of any workmanship in the units

Ha ha ha!
Ringo trying to lie and mislead like minority exposed!!!

To prevent people from believing in the lie of Ringo, I have to clarity that:
1) The 2 places mentioned to house 50 Bangladesh foreign workers is in Selegie Centre and is in District 7 and IS NOT in CCR!
2) The 2 units in Selegie Centre are apartments (not condos)!
3) The 2 units in Selegie Centre has shops below, just like JGateway is it? :moon:

What a big liar to keep insisting Selegie Centre is in CCR!
You don't even know what is CCR and you talking about investing in Singapore property?
No wonder you bought your JGateway at the so-called "right side of OCR" at >$1700 psf!
Oh no, think is more like CARROT-HEAD than buyer of "right side of OCR"! :drunk:

Coming from someone who KPKB about Tuas dormitory affecting JLD (12km away), the above comment certainly makes you sound damn desperate.

How many units of those condormitory do you own Teddybear? Must be making shit load of money for yourself I guess.

Ringo, we know you are 2nd BIGGEST LIAR here (after minority)!
Look at the highlighted words below! Dormitories are all around JLD, only 400m away from Jurong East MRT station, the heart of JLD!

More newspaper reports:

"Spaces taken up by foreign workers en masse, especially in areas such as Geylang, Little India and Jurong, reveal how “the Third World has manifested itself in our city,” says Professor Ho Kong Chong, an urban sociologist from the National University of Singapore (NUS)."

"Dressed in polo shirts and jeans, welder Ramesh Kumar and his friends fit right into the weekend crowd at Jurong East. Many people visit the nearby IMM mall to indulge in Singapore’s favourite pastime of shopping, but these migrant workers are here for another kind of addiction.

Workers living in the nearby dormitories come to this field located next to IMM Building to play cricket every weekend.
“We play cricket here every Saturday evenings and on Sundays,” says Kumar, who stands on a waterlogged field overgrown with knee-high grass. In the middle is a slender four-metre strip of sandy ground, dry and parched from regular cricket matches.
Pointing to buildings near an industrial estate some 400 metres away, Kumar says, “That’s where our dormitory is.” With no space big enough for cricket at their living quarters, the group of 20 Indian workers took to the field that once laid unused.
Director Shaik Mohammed, whose company Mini Environment Service runs four dormitories, says it’s only natural that migrant workers would spill out to these public spaces.
“How long can you keep a person contained in a facility, at home or even within his estate?” he questions. “We all want to get out eventually, and foreign workers are just like us, they’re human too.”
The field in Jurong East is not just a cricket ground. A bunch of Malaysian and Burmese workers have also taken advantage of the land the size of two soccer pitches. Each weekend, they turn up in brightly-coloured jerseys for soccer games, occupying another area within the field.
This afternoon, they have convened for a match. Foreign languages punctuate the air and bring the place to life. It isn’t easy to find an open field this huge, especially in our urban setting, but such an emptiness is all that the workers would ask for to keep their game going."

Quiet Sunday in Little India as foreign workers choose to stay away

By Amelia Tan

Little India was quiet for the most part of Sunday with foreign workers only trickling into the neighbourhood in the late afternoon.
Race Course Road, typically a busy meeting point for many of the workers, was unusually empty. However, some well-known retailers such as Mustafa Centre at Syed Alwi Road and the Banana Leaf Apollo restaurant along Race Course Road still managed to draw customers and were bustling with activity.

Grocery and electronic stores along Serangoon Road said their takings dropped as much as 70 per cent. They blamed the thinner crowds of foreign workers caused by the suspension of shuttle bus services from their dormitories to Little India.

Instead of going to Little India, some foreign workers decided to hang out in the neighbourhoods near their dormitories in Jurong East, Boon Lay and Jalan Kayu.
Businesses in these places such as cafes, grocery and handphone shops said sales were boosted by workers who came looking for alternative areas to spend their day off.

Shops at Jurong East MRT, which has an open field where the men gathered to relax, reported a 20 to 30 per cent spike in sales as a result.
The workers said they either chose remain in their dorms or venture into nearby neighbourhoods for meals or to buy groceries because their bosses discouraged them from going out this weekend.
Memories of last Sunday's riot at Little India was clearly on the minds of many of them. Indian national construction worker Santhosh Kota, 22, said he spent Sunday in his dorm at Jurong West to avoid any trouble.
"When big groups of men are together, you don't know what will happen," he said.
Police officers were seen patrolling areas near foreign worker dormitories throughout the day. As at 10pm, police said, there were no incidents reported, no breaches of the alcohol ban detected, and no one was caught for consuming alcohol in public.

You can go verify the exactly location of the whore houses, little manila, little india, little yangon, little bangkok.
they are light years ahead of JLD for sure.

So I hope you could just give up in trying to talk about foreign workers in the west because it will make a person who live in the wrong
side of CCR look stupid.

Wow- what a stinging rebuke from the JGateway condormitory king.

Ringo, Ringo, Ringo - what to do you with you. You are the gift that keeps on giving!

No amount of explanation on how to make money will ever go into your skull.

You have once again been caught out by your own tongue. Much like the yield issue. As per your standard operating procedure - rather than explain yourself, you completely ignore the rather embarrassing point raised & try to deflect attention away on unrelated topics.
You post so much crap on here you have forgot what you have & haven't said. Too bad others may not have.

I think you have also confused my lack of talking to you directly with some kind of approval of your endless volumes rants. I assure you - you are quite wrong. In fact if you notice, I wasn't even replying to you - I just thought it pertinent to bring to other forumers attention your incredible hypocrisy on this subject. To create an entire thread on this subject whilst intending to engage in exactly the same behaviour with your own mickey mouse JGateway.

I have better things to do with my life than engaging with a world class hypocrite.

Teddy - apparently paying less than 1000 psf for freehold in RV (admittedly during financial crisis & a much bigger unit) is apparently worse than paying 1500-1700 psf at Jurong at the peak of the recovery.
