Default Resale Properties: Do We Really Need Property Agents to Buy/Sell?

Just curious only. I have to qualify that I have nothing against property agents. In fact, I was really impressed by my agent who served me.

In a modern, electronic age like today, do we really need property agents to help us find a property to buy, or a seller to buy our property?

I mean, look at resale cars. About a decade ago, almost all car resales rely on 2nd-hand car dealers. But with the improvements of Internet know-hows, many car owners can now buy or sell 2nd hand cars on their own. Transaction is cheap, no need to let dealers cut their revenues.

Although property sales are probably a bit different, why can't we buy/sell on our own? Paperwork? Very difficult meh?

I foresee property agents' job to get tougher in a decade. Buy/sell no need go through them anymore. Well, new launches maybe. But resale? Hmm...

If holding a full time job, how to do viewings? Use Relatives?
