Default Consortium reveals horse shoe-shaped iconic design for Sports Hub

Consortium reveals horse shoe-shaped iconic design for Sports Hub

By Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 29 March 2007 1836 hrs

SINGAPORE : A horse shoe-shaped gold-coloured stadium that fronts the water, with the Singapore city as a backdrop - that is Singapore Gold Consortium's proposal for the Sports Hub.

It is the first among the three bidders to reveal its design to the media.

The designers have described it as the world's first waterfront stadium with a retractable roof.

The horse shoe design provides a view of the Kallang Basin and the city beyond, and allows the natural breeze to cool the stadium.

The complex also has another distinguishing feature that embraces the water theme.

"We have created what we call a Sports Quay, with the Kallang Basin at the heart and all the facilities built and designed around water. This is a public space so what we have done is create a new public destination place for Singapore," says Paul Henry, senior principal of HOK Sport Architecture, Singapore Gold Consortium.

The quay also means the project is environmentally friendly, as it helps with the cooling of the entire complex.

During special occasions like the National Day parade, the seating capacity can be increased from 55,000 to 80,000.

"During the National Day Parade for instance, we can open up the stadium to the whole of the basin area so the horse shoe-shape area embraces the city. That makes for a fabulous National Day Parade," says Henry.

And another world first - the field can be removed and water be filled into the stadium for water sports.

The complex includes an Aquatic Centre, a multi-purpose hall and an interactive sports museum.

There will be retail outlets and even a 200-room hotel which can house officials and members of sports associations.

The design has also created lots of spaces for the public, including a 1-km waterfront promenade.

It ensures that there is something for everyone.

"The site is busy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There won't only be the high profile events but there will also be other events going on that will attract the community. So besides your Robbie William and Kylie Minogue concerts, there will also be things for everyday people like you and I," says Neil Arora, executive director of Macquarie, Singapore Gold Consortium.

IMG will help bring in the marque sports events.

And even before the complex is up, there will be something for Singaporeans.

"The Singapore Indoor stadium will remain operational during the construction process so just to show what Singapore Gold can bring to Singapore, we do have a commitment in place from Maria Sharapova to come to Singapore and play a special exhibition match here," says Mark Adams, MD of IMG, Singapore Gold Consortium.

Alpine, the other bidder, says it will release its design next week, while the third bidder Singapore Sports Hub says it has no plans yet.

The announcement for the winning bid is due by July this year. The Sports Hub is expected to be completed by 2011. - CNA /ls

Default Macquarie in bid for Singapore stadium

    March 29, 2007, 10.27 pm (Singapore time)

Macquarie in bid for Singapore stadium

SINGAPORE - A consortium led by Australian financial group Macquarie on Thursday unveiled its proposal for a horseshoe-shaped stadium as part of a redevelopment bid for Singapore.

Executives from the consortium, which includes the designer of London's Wembley Stadium, said their proposal would be an iconic addition to the Singapore skyline.

The open-ended, waterfront, 55,000-seat national sports stadium would be the first of its kind in the world, Macquarie said.

The Macquarie-led SingaporeGold consortium, one of three bidders shortlisted for the multi-million dollar project, unveiled its proposal publicly after submitting it to the Singapore government last month.

Executives from the consortium, which includes the designer of London's Wembley Stadium, said their proposal would be an iconic addition to the Singapore skyline.

'Our design enhances Singapore's reputation as one of the world's most beautiful waterfront cities and creates a truly modern 21st century sports and recreation hub that will place Singapore at the centre of the global sporting community,' said Neil Arora, the project director.

'It will be the pride and and joy of every Singaporean,' said Mr Arora, Macquarie's executive director for regional infrastructure.

The proposal also includes a multi-purpose 3,000-seat indoor arena and aquatic centre.

The stadium features a retractable roof and its seating capacity can be expanded by another 25,000 with temporary stands.

Mr Arora and other consortium partners said they were not allowed to reveal the value of their bid for the sports project, part of Singapore's plans to redevelop the existing national stadium and surrounding precinct.

The Straits Times reported on Thursday the redevelopment was expected to cost from $600 million (US$397 million) to $800 million.

Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was quoted as saying all three bidders had submitted 'truly spectacular' proposals.

'Any one of those, if built, will become an icon,' he said.

The other two bidders for the project are Alpine Consortium and Singapore Sports Hub Consortium.

A winner will be announced by the middle of this year. -- AFP

    Bid for new National Stadium

SingaporeGold goes for plan with a view

Its horseshoe-shaped design presents an open face to the Kallang Basin

    By VINCENT WEE

(SINGAPORE) One of the three groups vying to build Singapore's new National Stadium unveiled a plan yesterday that aims to highlight the site's prime water frontage and take in a stunning view of the city skyline.

SingaporeGold consortium - which counts Macquarie, John Laing Infrastructure and HOK Sport as members - is the first to go public with its vision.

'The new National Stadium offers spectators a waterfront setting with views of the iconic Singapore skyline and provides an unparalleled viewing experience for events such as the National Day Parade flyover,' said Paul Henry, principal architect at HOK Sport.

HOK Sport is one of the world's top sports architecture firms, with projects like the new Wembley Stadium and Emirates Stadium under its belt.

The 55,000 capacity horseshoe-shaped stadium it proposes for Singapore will present an open face to the Kallang Basin and will be the world's first waterfront, open-ended stadium with a retractable roof.

There is also provision for the entire central area, comprising the track and grass pitch to be floated out - making way for an indoor watersports arena. And there will be space for 25,000 temporary seats, for a total capacity of 80,000 at special events like the National Day parade.

While the stadium is the centrepiece of the proposal, it is complemented by Sports Quay, a sports and recreation hub with a 2.6km waterfront promenade lined with retail, food and beverage outlets and plazas for outdoor activity.

The overall concept includes 36,000 sq m of commercial space and 10,000 sq m of office space as well as a sports-themed hotel and service apartment complex. The aim is to ensure 24/7 activity in the area.

'SingaporeGold's Sports Hub will change the physical characteristics of Singapore forever (and) will enhance its reputation as one of the world's most beautiful waterfront cities,' said consortium head Neil Arora. SingaporeGold also aims to leverage on the contacts and relationships that partner IMG - one of the world's top sports marketing companies - will bring to the project. IMG has obtained confirmation from Maria Sharapova that she will play at an exhibition match here, with Macquarie and John Laing Infrastructure underwriting the cost. The sporting community will also benefit from facilities designed in consultation with the renowned Australian Institute of Sport.

First Sports Hub proposal features horseshoe design

Open-ended concept will give spectators view of Kallang Basin, S'pore skyline

    By Nicholas Fang

SPORTING SPECTACULAR: The Singapore Gold consortium says that if its proposal is accepted, Singapore will have the first waterfront stadium in the world with an open-ended concept. The group was the first of three to unveil its plans after bids were submitted to the SSC last month. -- SINGAPORE GOLD

SINGAPOREANS may get to watch the hottest sporting action on the pitch while being fanned by a balmy sea breeze when the new National Stadium is ready in 2011.

This will become reality if one of the proposed plans for the new Sports Hub, with a radical horseshoe-shaped stadium, is accepted.

It will be the first waterfront stadium in the world to have an open-ended concept.

This means that spectators will get an unobstructed view of the Kallang Basin, with the Singapore skyline as a backdrop, when attending events there.

Besides the stunning sea view offered by the horseshoe concept, the stadium will also have a retractable roof that will allow spectators better views of events such as the National Day flypast of military aircraft.

The consortium behind the plan, Singapore Gold, believes that it will make the stadium instantly recognisable all over the world.

Singapore Gold, led by the Australia-based Macquarie firm, is one of three groups short-listed by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) for the new project, and was the first to unveil its plans after the bids were submitted to the SSC last month.

Also in its plans: A 200-room hotel and serviced apartments, along with 36,000 sq m of commercial and retail space, and a Sports Museum.

The stadium can accommodate 55,000, but capacity can be boosted to 80,000 with the erection of temporary seats in the empty space available.

Outside the stadium, the plans call for a sports quay - a 25m-wide, 2.6km-long waterfront promenade which winds its way along the Kallang waterfront.

This provides scenic vantage points for fans to watch water sports events such as dragon-boat racing.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, project head Neil Arora said: 'Nowhere else is there a stadium which offers such a view of the water and skyline as part of a state-of-the-art facility.'

He declined to reveal the cost of the proposed design, but the new hub project has been estimated to cost between $600 million and $800 million.

Other facilities for the planned hub include a new aquatic and water leisure centre with 6,000 seats and a multi-purpose indoor arena designed in collaboration with experts from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

'The input from AIS led to a design of the indoor arena, where elite athletes can continue training even while members of the public are using the venues,' explained Mr Paul Henry, principal architect for the group's architecture partner, HOK Sport.

To sweeten the deal, group member and sports marketing giant IMG said it has arranged for reigning US Open tennis champion Maria Sharapova to play an exhibition match in Singapore either this year or next if the group wins.

Other partners of the Singapore Gold group include architectural and engineering firm Shimizu Corporation, Lend Lease, an international retail and residential property group and the Australian Sports Commission.

The other consortiums short-listed by the SSC are the Singapore Sports Hub, which comprises firms such as World Sport Group, HSBC Singapore and architect Arup Sports, and the Alpine Consortium, whose lead architect Tim Hupe was behind Munich's Allianz Arena.

The winner is expected to be announced by the middle of the year.

Work on the Kallang site will begin when the National Stadium is torn down in the second half of this year.

Default Down by the river, a pitch that swims

Down by the river, a pitch that swims

SingaporeGold's bid for National Stadium packs a spectacular design

    Cubby Leong
    [email protected]

AS IT looks for its home with a view, the Sports Hub has been offered an intriguing option: A roof that can retract, gates that open onto the Kallang Basin and — most intriguingly — a pitch that can swim.

The proposal by SingaporeGold, one of the three bidders for the project, offers a new National Stadium like no other.

Imagine this: During a football match, the gates on one side open onto the waterfront so that the game is played virtually on the water's edge. The cameras that pan across will capture the game, the water and the famed Central Business District skyline in the backdrop.

But there is an even more stunning feature on offer. Just in case the Sports Hub decides to host an international rowing event, for example, boats can actually tow the entire pitch out to the Kallang basin. And while the temporary pitch floats outside, the area inside the stadium can be pumped with water and transformed into a watersport arena that 55,000 people can watch.

In fact, with the help of temporary stands, the capacity can be bumped up to 80,000.

They can watch events literally under the stars or indoors as the roof is retractable. Some may grouse that when the roof is pulled over the stadium, there will be no air-conditioning. But Mr Neil Arora, executive director and Head of Infrastructure at Macquarie, which is fronting the bid, said that the stadium would breathe naturally as it was on the water's edge.

The other bidders — Alpine Mayreder and Singapore Sports Hub — have yet to go public with their proposals. But SingaporeGold think that their concept is in pole position.

It has been put together by HOK Sport Architecture, which has offices in the US, Britain and Australia, and whose other major projects include the new Wembley Stadium and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Saying that the design was "unique to the world", HOK's senior principal Paul Henry said: "For our proposed National Stadium, the doors and roof are going to open up and reveal the city of Singapore.

"When you're in the stadium, we want you to be aware that you are in the city of Singapore. When closed, I assure you the Kallang Roar will reverberate like nothing heard before."

The Sports Hub is scheduled for completion by mid-2011 and will feature a new national stadium, an aquatic centre, a 3,000-seater multi-purpose indoor arena and 36,000 sqm of commercial space.

All three bidders submitted their proposals to the Singapore Government earlier this month.

The winners will be announced sometime in the middle of the year and work on the Sports Hub will begin sometime in the second half of the year, once the National Stadium is torn down.

No limit has been set on how much the project should cost and while SingaporeGold refused to reveal any figures, some have thrown up figures of $600 million to $800 million.

But cost should not stand in the way of the winning bid. It is up to each consortium to come up with ways to finance the Sports Hub.

The winner will then get to run the project for 25 years, getting a monthly payment from the Singapore Sports Council and a share of any other revenues generated.

On hearing of the concept, Singapore National Olympic Council general secretary Chris Chan was impressed. "It sounds a bit like the multi-functional Amsterdam ArenA," he said. "I can imagine it being really futuristic."

Singapore Bowling Federation president and Nominated MP Jessie Phua added: "At the end of the day, sport is entertainment. The 'wow' factor must be there."

And while the other bidders have not shown their hands, the good news is this: If their bids are even better than SingaporeGold's, Singapore can smile wider.
